I like to see lamps at dusk because they look best in the short period of time.

BTW, Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco) has won the Public Eye Award (2nd place) which is conducted by Swiss organisations to determine the worst corporation on committing human rights abuses and environmental harm. Tepco is the largest energy company in Japan and responsible for Fukushima nuclear disaster but succeeded in showing that humans were not as wise as they had thought.

薄暮に見る燈火は一際美しいものである。

If you have visited Japan you may have wondered why there are so many miniature shrines on the wall. Actually they are not related to shrines at all but just warnings that you cannot have a pee there.

にせ神社

こういう物を実際に何と呼ぶかは知らないのだが日本では壁から電柱まで至る所で見ることができる。何でも立ちションを防止するための物だということだが、恍惚とした表情でこの鳥居に小便をかけるおっちゃんも珍しいわけではなく効果の程は怪しいようである。

There are an uncountable number of shrines in Japan along with tons of temples. While some shrines look moderate, others have striking appearances like this one with a contrast between vermilion and white.

こちらは大阪の玉造稲荷神社。大阪でも玉造というと何だか冴えない感じの町だがこの神社は朱と白の対照も鮮やかで美しい。

今宮戎神社の大傘

１月の９・１０・１１日には大阪の今宮戎神社で十日戎があった。祭りと商売繁盛を願う初詣が一緒になったような感じで「年の初めのえべっさん商売繁盛で笹持ってこい」の軽快な音頭がひっきりなしに流れて大変賑やか。しかしここの一番の見物は福笹に縁起物を付けてくれる福娘だろう。競争率７０‐８０倍といわれる難関だけにその上品な雰囲気はとても大阪のものとは思えなかった。

Most Japanese people occasionally visit shrines and New Year's visit, which the red banner reads, is generally regarded as the most important one. It should be noted that the fancy structure in the background is not of the shrine but a "Love Hotel" which is designed for a certain activity of couples.

こちらは新年の大阪・桜宮神社。赤の幟が印象的ですが周りを取り囲むラブホも壮観です。まるでヨーロッパにでも迷い込んだようで神様も困惑してるかもしれません。

Running through the city

This orange train is typical of Osaka Loop Line (operated by JR West) which connects 19 stations in the central Osaka. This year has marked the 50th anniversary of the railway and you can see the sign to celebrate it on the face of the train.

都市を駆け抜けて

大阪環状線が全線開通したのは１９６１年の４月２５日だという。したがって今年は５０周年という特別な年であった。しかしながら一部の列車には記念ヘッドマークも付いているとはいえ、なぜか盛り上がらなかったようである。4/25 というのはＪＲにとって9/11や3/11のような悪夢の日なのかもしれない。

I spotted this beautiful yellow leaf at a neighbouring shrine in the late afternoon. Although I don't know the name of the tree, I think this elegant leaf is going well with an atmosphere of a shrine.

さて投票日（大阪市長選）も迫り候補者の街宣活動も煩くなってきました。マスコミではけっこう騒がれてるこのお二人（平松邦夫・橋下徹）ですが実際は目くそ鼻くそと言ったところでしょうか（笑）。大阪都構想とかいう誇大妄想は止めて大阪県くらいにした方がいいのかもしれません。

A worker was taking a rest in Osaka Castle Park in the afternoon. Despite on-going Fukushima nuclear crisis and mounting public debts, Osaka seems to be peaceful at least for now.

長閑な午後

穏やかな午後、仕事の合間だろうか大阪城公園のベンチで寛ぐおっちゃん。福島原発も財政破綻も関係なく大阪は平和なんだなあーと感じる一時だった。

ところで法政大学による「各都道府県の幸福度調査」によると大阪府は最下位の４７位であった（笑）。確かに大阪は失業率・生活保護が最悪、しかも児童虐待・貧困ビジネス・ひったくりなどまるで悪の巣窟である。しかしこのベンチのおっちゃんなら「大阪ほどええとこ他にないのちゃう」とか言いそうである。

Parading to the shrine

Although they finished their autumn festival late in October, they recently paraded again with 11 floats to a shrine in Osaka Castle Park to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the reconstruction of Osaka castle.

神社への行進

１０月下旬に村の秋祭りが終わったところだが、先日また城東区のだんじり（山車）の曳行があった。今回は大阪城天守閣復興８０周年のお祝いに大阪城公園の豊国神社（中央区）まで城東区内のだんじり全１１台が繰り出すという特別企画。鴫野村や今福村とはまた違った晴れ舞台で大いに盛り上がってました。

先日、大阪市城東区の鴫野今福地区で秋祭りがあった。これは皇太神宮の西之町のだんじり（山車）が城東商店街を行くところ。しかしいつも思うのだが、この祭りは立派なだんじりがある割には村民の盛り上がりが今一つなのですね。

This is a picture of Osaka castle which is often said to be one of the three greatest castles in Japan along with Himeji castle and Kumamoto castle. But this castle was rebuilt in 1931 with modern technology, so it looks a little bit flashy.

This flower is called lantana which is in bloom from spring to autumn in Japan. As this plant originally comes from tropical regions of the Americas, it shows a summer smile in the autumn.

川というのは街中でも広い空を見る所になるのでよいものである。

さて大阪は水都だという。なるほど市内に川が多いのは確かだが、あれだけ水が汚いと（しかも臭い）水都と呼ぶのはかなり抵抗があるのではないだろうか。くいだおれの街なら酔都でもよさそうだが長引く不景気で最近は元気のいい酔っぱらいも見なくなった。そこで粋都と言いたいところだがこの野暮ったい街にはとても似合わない。やはりこの経済の凋落を考えると悲しいかな衰都と呼ぶしかないようである。

Cityscape of Osaka

Sometimes common cityscapes show exciting aspects with the expressive sky.

BTW Osaka was ranked 7th on the list of the most attractive prefectures in Japan. Japan consists of 47 prefectures such as Tokyo, Kyoto or Hiroshima. But I would think the 7th place was too good for Osaka.

表情豊かな空の下、ありふれた風景にワクワクする時がある。

さて先日ブランド総合研究所が発表した地域ブランド調査（４７都道府県対象）によると大阪の魅力度は何と全国７位ということである。しかしこの評価はちょっと大阪には高すぎるかもしれませんね。

As July is the time for summer festivals in Osaka there are numerous events through the month. One of my favourites is to see the festival floats parading through the town.

路地を行くだんじり

７月といえば大阪では夏祭りの季節である。一般に大阪の三大祭りは愛染祭り、天神祭り、住吉祭りとされるが私のは杭全神社夏祭り（平野区）、八剱神社夏祭り（城東区鴫野）、天神祭りとなる。だんじりのない祭りはどこか物足りないものである。

It was 35 degrees here in Osaka today. The sun was burning, the air was boiling, the road was baking and humans were sizzling. Even sunflowers seemed to be overheating.

If I have to choose just one colour for roses it would be yellow, the colour of this rose called Golden Medallion. I cannot come up with specific reason for that but just think yellow roses are definitely elegant.

Although we are officially in the rainy season we have recently had burning days of around 33 degrees Celsius instead of rain. So I've been exhausted by the boiling air. And this cat also seems to be worn out by the heat wave.

吾輩は猫である。名前は一応あるが年を取りそんなものはどうでもよくなってしまった。近頃では主人に呼ばれても返事もせぬ。どこで生まれたかとんと見当がつかぬが物心ついてからは西中島で暮らしておる。この辺りは飲食店や風俗店などが立ち並ぶいかがわしい所であまり好きではない。しかも通りをゆく人間が悪質で昼寝をしておる吾輩に触ったり写真を撮ったりする。甚だ迷惑であるが猫もそれほど楽ではないということである。

鼓舞する花

梅には早咲き、中咲き、遅咲きがあるという。大阪城公園の遅咲きには豊後、高砂、八重揚羽、淋子梅、摩耶紅などがあるが今年は福島原発の爆発騒ぎのお陰で梅どころではなかった。この写真は豊後。自然には言葉はなくとも人を鼓舞する力があるのですね。

Despite getting officially into the spring we are going through gloomy days.

While being overwhelmed by the devastation caused by the earthquake and tsunami on 3/11 we were seized by human disaster that Fukushima nuclear power plant was out of control having a possibility of melt down. Even now we are threatened by radioactive contamination of the air, water and food watching if we can avert catastrophe like Chernobyl.

春とはいえ憂鬱な日が続いています。

「わが国の原子力技術はソ連とは違う。従って安全性に問題はない。」
チェルノブイリ原発の爆発事故以来何度となく聞かされた言葉だが福島第一原発が嘘だったことを証明しました。デマカセがばれると今度は「想定外」の連発で責任回避と保身に終始。実際は想定外どころか東電と政府は数々の警告を無視し続けてきたようです。単なる人災ですね。

For the victims of Japan disaster

We have been seeing dreadful devastation which was caused by the earthquake and tsunami on 11 March. Although the death toll is not confirmed yet it is said to be over 20,000. Seeing this horrific tragedy I cannot help feeling it should be the rage of the earth against humans who have destroyed the nature greedily and crazily.

This is an ume blossom which seems to show joy of blooming under the perfect blue sky. And it is pleasing for us to see that.

開花の喜び

大阪には大阪城公園というのがある。正直、ただ広いだけでつまらない所なのだが梅林は悪くない。しかし私はこの梅林という言葉の響きが気に入らない。ばい菌に近いというのもあるが梅淋とも書けてしまうから恐ろしい。エイズが出てきてから目立たなくなったが昔は梅毒・淋病は怖い病気だったという。梅園（うめえん）にしましょう。

さてこの梅園にはたくさんの種類の梅の木があり華農玉蝶・楊貴妃・思いのまま・朱鷺の舞・武蔵野といった珍しいものもあるようだが私はあまり関心がない。むしろ端正な一重野梅・八重野梅・鶯宿が光画の素材にはよい。またこの写真の緑萼も爽やかで悪くはない。

We had a rare snowfall recently here in Osaka but it started to melt soon as the temperature was not so low. This small ume blossom looked like a child playing with the snow.

I have thought that there are some similarities between photography and haiku. And now I've made it.

先日は大阪では珍しく積雪があった。残念ながら気温がそれほど低くなくすぐに融けてしまったが大阪城公園へ行くと子供たちが作った雪だるまがたくさんあった。この小さな一重野梅も雪遊びのしすぎで少し疲れているように見えた。

This is an ume blossom which has just started to bloom in Osaka. As there are many types in ume trees we can see various blossoms almost until the end of March.

Japanese lanterns always provide us with soft and warm lights. Despite having such a fine culture, the cityscape in Japan is mostly filled with vulgar business activities.

提灯の明かりは優しくていいですね。奥ゆかしささえ感じます。このような文化を持ちながらも戦後日本人はハチャメチャな道を歩んでしまいました。もったいない事をしましたね。

This is a scene from Tenjinbashisuji Shopping Mall which is said to be the longest one in Japan with the length of 2.6km. As this arcade is close to a famous shrine, Tenmangu in Osaka, there are replicas of the gate of the shrine under the roof.

明かりの筋

大阪天満宮のすぐ近くに天神橋筋商店街がある。日本一長い商店街との話だが端から端まで歩いたことはまだない。ご覧のように中空に大きな鳥居が並んでおる。神社ですら茶化してしまうのはお笑いの町大阪らしいが、こういうものでは倉敷や高山のような観光地にはなれないのが悲しいですね。
